Producer Profile

Roddy Purser - White Rock Farms

Roddy, along with his father, Rodney, owns White Rock Farms LLC. They are contract growers for Murphy Brown and currently have three 2200 sow farrow to wean farms in Anson County. White Rock Farms has been in business since 1998 and also has a fertile egg operation, as well as cattle and meat goats.

Recognizing the constant push for stricter laws and rules, Roddy says his greatest challenge as a pork producer is knowing how to prepare for what may come next in regards to environmental and labor regulations and how he will continue to operate. Also, disease prevention and bio-security are both top priorities and concerns for Roddy on his farm.

The hog industry, Roddy says, is facing one of its biggest challenges in the movement by some large national anti-agriculture groups who adamantly oppose commercial farming and want to make it obsolete.

Roddy is taking a proactive stance to support agriculture by becoming more involved. He joined the NC Pork Council board of directors in February 2010 for a three-year term. He also serves on the board of directors for the Anson county Cattlemen's Association.

Roddy lives in Union county and will be married in May 2010. He said choosing a wife who understood and could appreciate a farmer's life was an absolute must.

When asked for his barbecue restaurant recommendation Roddy had a hard time narrowing it down, but he did say if you're ever in Union county, Big Bob Gibson's in Monroe is certainly worth a try!
