Producer ProfilesPitt County resident Miriam Lewis has been a pork producer for over 20 years. She and her family own a nursery and finishing operation on contract with Premium Standard Farms. They also raise tobacco, peanuts and cattle. In addition to her role on the farm, Miriam is a busy mother of three children. She is advisor on numerous committees, active in the Farmville Christian Church, and serves as a volunteer to the local Meals on Wheels program and local soup kitchen. Miriam was raised in Jamestown and was an active 4-H member as a youth. She is a graduate of North Carolina State University where she earned an animal science degree. She currently serves as a director on the board of the North Carolina Pork Council and is active in a variety of other livestock associations and programs including the Coastal Plain Livestock Show and Sale Committee, Pitt County Youth Livestock Committee, and North Carolina Junior Angus Association. In addition, Miriam has always been a very active 4-H volunteer and club leader serving in numerous roles. Each year, she provides show animals for not only her own children, but children in her club and community. The Lewis children and other 4-H members routinely show cattle, hogs, goats, and lambs at livestock shows all over the state. According to Phillip Rowan, agriculture extension agent with Pitt County Cooperative Extension Service, Miriam has always felt the need to promote the pork industry and agriculture and has demonstrated this in her actions every day. Because of her dedication to the industry, she has been recognized twice by the NCPC - as Pork All-American and in 2006 as Outstanding Pork Producer. |
