North Carolina Pork Council Introduces State Environmental Steward Program The North Carolina Pork Council (NCPC) has initiated a State Environmental Steward Recognition Program with the goal of recognizing one of our producers each year that excels in the area of on farm environmental stewardship. It is also a great opportunity for the industry to promote environmental excellence and make the public, as well as policy makers aware of the proactive measures producers are taking to protect the environment. The program will cover the same basic areas that are covered in the national Environmental Stewards program that is a joint effort between National Hog Farmer and Pork Checkoff, which include manure management, soil conservation, water conservation, wildlife habitat, air quality and public relations. It is also our desire to work with the top three (3) applicants to prepare their application for NPB national submittal.
Application and Selection Process Applications will be received by the North Carolina Pork Council between August 1 and October 15th of each year. Following review of all applications by the Environmental Stewardship Awards Committee and visits to selected farms during November and December, the winner will be selected and presented as NCPCs Environmental Steward of the Year at the January board meeting. The winner will receive a $ 500 cash award and a farm sign identifying them as the recipient of this honor.
