The North Carolina Pork Council responds to media reports regarding proposals for state legislation to regulate commercial dog-breeding facilities, commonly known as “puppy mills”:
We wholeheartedly believe in the fair treatment and overall well-being of all animals. Our commitment to animal well-being is demonstrated through the “We Care” program, a 21-point statement of ethical principles that highlights our pork producers’ commitment to responsible practices. These same principles should extend to anyone in the business of raising animals for commercial purposes of any kind.
Through “We Care” we affirm our obligation to “produce safe food, protect and promote animal well-being, ensure practices to protect public health, safeguard natural resources in all of our practices, provide a work environment that is safe and consistent with all of our ethical principles, and contribute to a better quality of life in our communities.”
